This week’s challenge is all about dialogue! Here’s the task:
- Write a scene using dialogue only — keep the pace strong and engaging. No rambling!
- Add in descriptions — once you’re happy with the dialogue, add movement and action between lines. Use these descriptions to show what characters are doing as they talk, helping to make the scene feel alive.
Why It Works
Cutting idle chatter can make a huge difference in editing. Dialogue should keep the reader’s attention, but sometimes it’s easy to let conversations drag or explain too much. A strong balance of dialogue and movement can add layers to a scene, giving insight into characters and setting without relying too heavily on back-and-forth exchanges.
I’ve found that writing a scene with dialogue only helps me focus on what’s necessary, trimming down to the essentials. Then, adding movement and actions between lines adds a dynamic feel. It’s a great way to keep your dialogue purposeful!
Give it a try, and see how your scenes come to life with a sharper, more dynamic flow.
Happy writing!
